“Residential” isn't a place to an anti-bot system — it's a verdict it reaches from a handful of signals. An IP either looks like a real person on a home connection, or it doesn't. Understanding those signals explains why some proxies sail through and others get blocked on sight.

What makes an IP look residential to an anti-bot system

It starts with the ASN: a consumer ISP, not a host

The single biggest signal is the network the IP belongs to. Anti-bot systems look at the ASN and ask one question: is this a consumer internet provider or a hosting company?

  • Consumer ISP (Comcast, Vodafone, Orange, Deutsche Telekom…) → this is where real households live. Reads as residential.
  • Hosting/datacenter (AWS, OVH, Hetzner…) → no real person browses from a server rack. Reads as proxy/VPN. (That's the flip side, covered in how websites detect VPN and proxy IPs.)

A datacenter IP can't fake this — the ASN is public record. A real residential IP passes it for free.

Not listed in any proxy/VPN database

The second signal is absence. Anti-bot detection is largely supplied by third-party providers that keep massive databases of known proxy, VPN and datacenter IPs, updated constantly by machine-learning models. An IP looks residential in large part because it isn't in those lists. Nothing to match against = nothing to flag. A real home IP on a consumer ASN that no one has reported simply isn't there.

A clean record and consistent geo

  • Clean reputation — no abuse reports or fraud history attached to the address.
  • Consistent geolocation — the IP's country/region lines up with the browser's timezone, language and other signals, the way a real user's would.
  • ISP-style reverse DNS — hostnames that look like a home broadband line, not hosting infrastructure.

Why residential proxies are hard to track

Stack these up and the picture is clear: a genuine residential proxy uses real-device IPs on consumer ASNs that aren't in the proxy databases and carry clean histories — so there's nothing for the first, cheapest lines of detection to catch. Datacenter proxies fail the very first signal (the ASN) and never recover. That's why anything that needs to blend in runs on clean residential or mobile pools.
